Callaway used to be known as a company that produced golf clubs for the mid-to-high handicap golfer. Not so long ago a fellow named Roger Cleveland joined their brain trust and things were never the same again. He spear-headed a drive within the company to produce clubs for the better player and his efforts were met with much success. The latest such product is the Callaway Jaws wedge with its ball-shredding Mack Daddy grooves.

These wedges can do some major damage. Even on chips just from around the fringe, this Jaws wedge was filling its grooves with the outer layer of every golf ball it came in contact with. Other than a lot of damaged golf balls, the result is very impressive spin on and around the greens.

The Jaws wedge is aptly named. This is from just 3 swings!

There’s more to these wedges than just the grooves. These wedges are soft forged of S20C and they are most likely Endo forged from their Thailand plant. Weight has been moved to the top blade raising the center of gravity for a more piercing flight. The sole is a C-Grind where they grind a good amount of material off of the trailing edge of the sole towards the heel so that when the face is wide open it puts the leading edge very close to the ground making it easy to pick the ball cleanly from any lie. Since the grind makes the club play with less effective bounce than they measure, Callaway has increased the bounce on them to compensate. Don’t let the number fool or concern you. They will get the job done right.

First impression when addressing the ball compared to other wedges is you instantly can feel that the Callaway Jaws wedge is much heavier feeling then the other wedges in my arsenal. Weighing in at around 485 grams, they were 25-grams heavier on the average than others in weight. I also noticed a bit more offset then in a typical teardrop shaped wedges; something which surprised me. You typically see little to no offset when looking at a tour style wedge like the Callaway Jaws.

Bounce rates are higher than the norm although the C-Grind on the sole gives the wedge a much lower effective bounce when comparing to wedges with a similar bounce. The 2 finishes that are available were both very appealing. If you prefer chrome or satin wedges you will most likely be happy with their “Milky Chrome” model. This is a dull chrome that is a hybrid between a shiny high-polish and a satin finish. You will not have to worry about glare at all, which is nice. Personally, I prefer their “Dark Vintage” finish; it has a nice look on the 1020 forged carbon steel heads. I love the way black heads look when they are new in the bag and the way they wear as you get a few rounds under your belt with them.

Accuracy and distance on the Jaws wedges was typical for a tour calibre wedge. The ample weight gives you a good sense of where the clubhead is throughout your swing. You can almost feel it compress the ball at impact and send it with arrow-like precision towards the target. This feel increases confidence and enhances distance control. It was easy. It’s what I expect from my wedges.

Around the fringe is where the Jaws shine. These grooves can put spin on the ball from any lie around the green. The C-Grind allows the golfer to manipulate the clubface without changing the bounce angles too much. Since there is less surface of the sole making contact with the ground the wedge is allowed to cut through heavy lies that would otherwise catch the head making it more difficult to reach the ball squarely at impact. I had to clean the grooves after every 10-15 yard short chip from around the green…not because they were filled with dirt but because they were literally filled with golf ball cover. They have some serious bite even from just off the green. The highlight of the test came on the 6th hole of the Makulot course at Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club when I missed the green with my approach shot on the short side. I pulled out the 60* wedge and from a tight lie 15 yards away, hit a chip that two hops and stopped dead right next to the hole. Great stuff!

The versatility of the grind helps out with bunker shots simply because you almost never get the same lie from a bunker. The grooves work just as well from the sand as they do from turf. This helps in confidence tremendously simply because you feel like you can actually take a swing through the bunker and be safe. It reduces the dreaded deceleration that many have a problem with in the bunkers.

When all’s said and done, this is a quality piece that will serve any golfer well. Its versatile sole grind and aggressive grooves will make you look like a hero in your friends’ eyes and do its bit to help bring your scores down. It belongs in your bag. The Callaway Jaws wedge is available at Golf Worx at the City Golf driving range and will be coming soon to a pro shop near you. If you want to make the ball dance like the pros, you should give Jaws a long hard look.

  • Very cool article. Just one quick question though. What groove shape does this baby have? Square, V, etc.? Does it conform to the current groove rules? I hope so. I love the idea.

  • MGB says:

The grooves on the Jaws wedge do not conform to the new Condition of Competition on the professional tours but are legal for play for top amateurs up to 2014 and for the rest of us until 2024. You could stock up on wedges so you don’t run out til then.

I have tried out just about every golf-club brand name and therefore have decided some of these club sets are now the most effective there may be,having the fresh model heading into the field recently it’s difficult to make up your mind what to get. Believe I am going to get several of them collectively to help become accustomed to using those to find out should they’re worthy of purchasing a entire set.
