The Orchard Founder’s Cup

The Founder’s Cup of The Orchard Golf and Country Club has blossomed into one of the most popular member-guest tournaments in the country. This year the club held the 14th staging of the event and the turnout was fantastic. To hear The Orchard’s president, Conrad Benitez tell it, The Founder’s Cup was established as a way to reciprocate the invitations of the club’s members with their hosts at the member-guest tournaments at other golf clubs. As you all know, this is when the club puts its best foot forward, showering entrants with giveaways, complimentary food and drink and abundant raffle prizes. This is the time when the golf course is also at peak condition and the... Read More

Jay Bayron wins PGT’s season ender at Canlubang

Jay Bayron Jay Bayron played steady golf while Tonton Asistio folded on the back nine to win the ICTSI Canlubang Golf Invitational at the Canlubang Golf and Country Club. Although he started with a bogey on 1, Bayron finished his front nine 2-under for the day after birdies on 5, 8 and 9. Asistio stayed steady on the front nine but came undone on the back nine with a bogey on 10 followed by a double on 13 and successive bogeys on 14 and 15. His errors allowed veteran Benjie Magada to move into second on his own while Asistio fell back into a tie for third with Artemio Murakami. Carl Santos Ocampo Carl Santos Ocampo won his second successive low amateur crown on the Philippine Golf Tour finishing... Read More

Tour Notebook – ICTSI Canlubang Invitational, Day 2

Tonton Asistio If there was a theme for today’s round at the ICTSI Canlubang Invitational, it was that youth will be served. Neo-pro Antonio “Tonton” Asistio fired a 4-under par 68 to backup his 2-under par 70 yesterday to hold sway at the top of the leaderboard at 6-under par. He leads by one over Jay Bayron and by two over Marvin Dumandan. 11 amateurs made the cut and three made the top 10; unheralded Miguel Ochoa was the best of the lot. He sits alone in fourth at 2-under par with reigning Philippine amateur champ Clyde Modilla and Carl Santos Ocampo tied for 10th with Richard Sinfuego and Benjie Magada at 1-over par. Miguel Ochoa Juvic Pagunsan was expected to make a big... Read More

Tour Notebook – ICTSI Canlubang Invitational Day 1

The Philippine Golf Tour makes its last stop for the year at Canlubang’s vaunted North Course. The course was just recognized as the best golf course in the country by Asia Golf Monthly so it’s a fitting venue for the last event of the year. The course didn’t play easy; only nine out of the field of 93 competitors broke par. It’s in superb shape with the rough up and the greens rolling fast. First round leader Jay Bayron Jay Bayron leads the field with his opening 68 with veteran Cassius Casas, long hitting Elmer Saban and amateur Miguel Ochoa in hot pursuit just one stroke back. Bayron cut his teeth here at Canlubang so look for him and the rest of the Canlubang boys... Read More

Tour Notebook – Philippine Golf Tour ICTSI Mimosa Challenge

- The ICTSI Mimosa Challenge was aptly named; of the 96 amateur and professional golfers that started on Wednesay, November 10 only one finished under par; the champion Marvin Dumandan. This makes Mimosa Golf and Country Club’s Mountain View course one of the toughest stops on the Tour this year. Part of that was the course’s length; a hair under 7200 yards and the other the bumpy and somewhat inconsistent greens. The course could have played longer still (the Mountain View plays over 7300 yards from the tips) but Tour officials decided that the setup they used was sufficient for their purposes. They were right. - One of the shortest holes on the golf course proved the most difficult.... Read More

Exclusive pics of Bettinardi’s 2011 putter line-up

As a golfer, putters and drivers have fascinated me the most. Drivers for the satisfaction of nailing a long drive and putters for their aesthetic qualities. There are few that have piqued my interest like Bettinardi putters. They were the talk of the internet; about how only limited quantities of each putter were produced and about how much they cost. What makes all Bettinardi putters truly unique is the fact that each piece is individually milled from one piece steel. Though conventionally designed, it is the jewel-like milling on the putter face and the precision of their manufacture that capture my imagination. Of course acquiring one was a mere pipe dream until an independent golf store... Read More
