On Winning, Match Play, Langer and Golf: Some Thoughts Occasioned by Riviera’s Fourth Win in the Fed League
Riviera Golf and Country Club recently walked away with their fourth win in the Federation Men’s League. Here are some thoughts on their recent win by one of the members on the team; Pinoygolfer Bok Labastilla. This article was also published in the September 26, 2010 edition of Business Mirror Golf. Enjoy. Vince Lombardi once said: “Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is.” Having gone through dozens of civilized warfare in my profession as a lawyer and in games like golf and poker, I realized that Lombardi’s statement does not really satisfy me. In essence, my entire objection to his formulation revolves around the issue of measurability. If I want to win so much, by... Read More
Microtel Mall of Asia – Taking the limited service hotel to a new level
Microtel Inns and Suites is a relative newcomer in the Philippine hotel industry. Capitalizing on a gap in room availability in what industry insiders call the limited service niche, the upstart hotel group operated locally by the Phinma Group has expanded to 9 locations country wide in just 12 years. With just a couple of exceptions, most Microtels are located in close proximity to one or more golf courses making this chain the travelling golfer’s best friend. The newest and most unique member of the chain is the Microtel Mall of Asia. Ideally located right next to SMX and SM’s Mall of Asia, it’s the only Microtel in Metro Manila and with 150 rooms it is the largest property in the... Read More
Club Intramuros 2000 – Golf in history’s shadow
The signature 10th with Manila City Hall in the background In the five-odd years that I’ve been writing about golf, I’ve played a lot of golf courses and of the lot, Club Intramuros 2000 is indubitably the most unique. Established in the early 1900’s, Club Intramuros began its existence as a short nine-hole course known as the Manila Municipal Golf Links more commonly known as “Muni”. In the early 1930’s, the course came under the management of the City Government of Manila and was expanded to a full 18-holes 3,896-yards in length playing to a par of 60. In 1981, control and management of the golf course was transferred to the Philippine Tourism Authority by presidential decree.... Read More
Callaway Diablo Forged Irons – Bridging the Gap
With regards to my preferences for irons, I’m torn. On the one hand I love the feel of a well struck forged blade; there’s just something about the denseness, the sweetness of the feel at impact that raises the hairs on the back of my neck. But if I don’t have my best game with me, we can pretty much throw the prospect of a good score out the window. On the other hand, as a golf-tech geek, I have been fully aware of the technology available that makes irons more accessible for some time now. As a lower handicapper, I make other demands of my irons and I like a more classic look at address, all things not usually associated with game improvement (GI) irons. Though a boon to the average...
