Tour Notebook – ICTSI Forest Hills Championships Day 3

Mars Pucay wins The fact that Mars Pucay won at Forest Hills comes as no surprise to those that know his game. Pucay is known for being a “Steady Eddie” sort of player; his hardly misses any fairways and is always in or around a good scoring position around the green. He had his work cut out for him at Forest Hills, though. Artemio Murakami showed just how explosive a player he is by shooting a 5-under par 31 on the Palmer 9 and started his back nine with a birdie on the par 5 10th. Unfortunately, the film crew from Studio 23 unsettled him on number 11 and he made bogie. Then he and Elmer Salvador both doubled the 12th, handing the lead back to Pucay. He consolidated that lead with... Read More

Tour Notebook – ICTSI Forest Hills Championships Day 2

Salvador and Pucay still tied for the lead After 36-holes of play, Elmer Salvador and Mars Pucay remain tied for the top spot in the ICTSI Forest Hills Championships. Both carded identical rounds of 3-under par, 69. The will be joined in the last group by Artemio Murakami who shot 4-under par on his back nine in the second round to vault up the leaderboard. Benjie Magada joins Murakami at 1-under par, 4-strokes back of the leading duo. Elmer Saban is the lone golfer at even par. Long hitting Ramil Bisera shot the low round of the day; a sparkling 4-under par 68. Were it not for a first day 77, he’d be much further up the leaderboard. Four amateurs made the halfway cut; ICTSI stablemates... Read More

Tour Notebook – ICTSI Forest Hills Championships Day 1

Elmer, What Happened? Early in the morning session, word spread around the course that Elmer Salvador had the hot round of the day going. Starting on number 1, he had consecutive birdies on 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Unfortunately he gave four shots back on his inward nine which was punctuated by a double on number 18. I guess it only shows that as good as these guys are, they’re human too. strong>Helloooo rnie! The ICTSI Forest Hills Championships are being contested on composite course using the newer Palmer front nine with the back nine of the Nicklaus course. While this move might have drawn criticism from some quarters, the course is giving the pros all they can handle. And it’s not... Read More

Tour Notebook – ICTSI Riviera Classic

Tour Notebook – ICTSI Riviera Classic A view from behind the ropes The Couples Course!? Rolling into the Riviera Golf and Country Club, I was surprised to see the Tour’s sign boards on the Couples Course on the way to the clubhouse. “They’re using the Couples?” I thought to myself, “The pros will tear that course up.” I was sure they’d be using the more difficult Langer course. Talk around the clubhouse was that 12-15-under would win. The concerns were unfounded. Eventual champ Juvic Pagunsan was 8-under par and won by 6, but just five other professionals finished under par for the three days. The Couples wasn’t the pushover everyone feared. The difficulty lay with the greens.... Read More

Golf is in Good Hands

Today we got a little glimpse of the future of the game of golf. Lorena Ochoa retires, Ai Miyazato wins her third LPGA tournament of the year and Shin Jiyai replaces Ochoa as the new world number 1. Ryo Ishikawa shoots 58 in the final round of The Crowns for his seventh win on the Japan Tour and Alvaro Quiros, perhaps the game’s longest hitter, wins the Spanish Open in a playoff. But perhaps the most impressive of the prodigies; Rory McIlroy shoots 62 in the final round of the Quail Hollow which included going 5-under par in the last 5 holes to win the tournament over Phil Mickelson after making the number on the cut. Notice the trend? The guard has changed. The new generation of golf... Read More
