Alone on the course

When I started playing golf, most of the rounds I played were with friends at their golf clubs. You see, I didn’t pick up a club until I was well into my thirties and only started playing because a good friend convinced me that it would be a fun thing to go up to Baguio for his birthday and whack the little white ball around Baguio Country Club after we had a few beers. I wasn’t a member at any of the golf clubs in the Metro so learning the game meant going to the public driving ranges and golf courses. So I hit the range at the old Bonifacio Golf Club for a month and once I had that first round under my belt I was thoroughly hooked on the game. After the Baguio experience, I took up the... Read More

Pueblo de Oro Golf Club – a golden nugget in the making

The quality of the land is possibly the most important consideration when you want to build a great golf course. A good course needs topography, majestic vistas and a golf course that will challenge both hacker and professional. Pueblo de Oro Golf Club at the gateway of Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao is just such a golf course. With land this good, it was important to find an architect that could do it justice. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. is easily the most popular golf architect in the country and for good reason; he builds great golf courses. Sta. Elena, Canlubang Golf & Country Club, Calatagan Golf Club, Ayala Greenfield Estates and Summit Point are all products of Jones, Jr.’s vision. Jones... Read More

Golftoimpress.com

If you’re into fine golf clubs, then you’re probably aware of the fact that the best in the world are produced in Japan. The Japanese enthusiast simply demands the best and is usually prepared to pay for it. Unfortunately, the rest of the world is reluctant to do the same, which means that information about our objects of desire is difficult to acquire as most of the sites that carry them are in Japanese. No longer. Welcome golftoimpress.com a new blog from an old hand in the world of Japanese domestic market golf club, Tourspecgolf.com. I’ve only just discovered the blog and have yet to explore it fully, but it seems to be everything that fascinated me about Tourspecgolf in... Read More

TaylorMade R9 – one golfer’s review

In a world where technology has transformed our golf clubs, TaylorMade introduces what they’re calling the most advanced driver on the planet. The new TaylorMade R9 features full adjustability; it combines 3 moveable weights with the Carlsbad giant’s latest technology, Flight Control Technology or FCT. FCT gives the golfer the ability to adjust the club head to affect face angle and loft. The combination of MWT and FCT give 75 yards of left to right adjustability, 3 degrees of launch angle adjustability, and up to 1800 rpm of spin adjustability. The club head can be rotated into one of eight positions, giving the ability to adjust from 2 degrees closed to 2 degrees open. This is done... Read More

Fernando, Ardina, Garcia win 2009 Philippine Amateur

Mark Fernando and Dottie Ardina won the men’s and ladies division titles in the Philippine Amateur Golf Championships Sunday in Binangonan, Rizal. Fernando, a member of Tommy Manotoc’s Calatagan stable, reached the finals with a 5 & 4 win over local bet Dino Villanueva and overcame a bogie start with a string of birdies from the third to the fifth hole for a 5 and 4 thrashing of Korean national Jeung Hun-wang. With this win, Fernando gets an automatic berth in the six-man national pool from which the four members of the RP team seeing action in the Putra and Nomura Cups will be selected. Ardina, on a break from a US golf scholarship from ICTSI, also enjoyed a relatively easy victory... Read More

Are You Ready, Partner?

The following is rlv’s account of his experience at the Mizuno Scramble Grand Finals which concluded recently at Splendido Golf Club. Take it away, rlv! This is long overdue, but I feel I have to write about it, not only to thank the guys at Mizuno, especially Pao and Bap, but also to share the fun, excitement and experience I had during the tournament. But first, let us give credit where credit is due. And that is to Mizuno Philippines for staging this great tournament. I am not sure if this is the 2nd or 3rd year of the event, but this year’s version is a huge success! Pao and Bap (and their staff) did a masterful job in running the 12 legs as well as the Grand Finals. How I wish that... Read More
